The adventures of little Dorothy and her dog Totò through the through the magical land of Oz, accompanied by a brainless scarecrow, a heartless robot and a cowardly lion, have gone down in film history. The film starring Judy Garland, with her red shoes singing that she wants to travel “beyond the rainbow”, will soon be 85 years since its premiere, and it is an anniversary that the Calella Film Festival wants to mark by dedicating this autumn edition to it.

The Wizard of Oz by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starring Judy Garland was released in August 1939. It is based on a children’s story in which a girl from Kansas, disappointed by everyday reality, is swept away by a tornado to a place beyond the rainbow: the wonderful land of Oz.

Among the awards he received, the most important are an Oscar for best soundtrack and an Oscar for best original song for Over the Rainbow.

A classic fantasy musical film that will star in the poster of the next edition of the Calella Film Festival, which will celebrate almost 85 years since its premiere and all the production that has been generated around it. Without going any further, the musical Wicked, which by the way is also celebrating its tenth birthday since its premiere on Broadway, ready to discover what the film adaptation will be like. Anna Giménez, from the Rosebud Association of Film Lovers, organiser of the event, explains.

MIXING THE TRIBUTE IN CLASSIC CINEMA WITH THE TRIBUTE IN THEATRE AND THE FACT THAT “WICKED” WILL ALSO BE MADE INTO A FILM. THE FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN SO WELL RECEIVED AS A MUSICAL THEATRE SHOW INVITES US TO MAKE THE FILM ADAPTATION, AS HAS HAPPENED WITH OTHER GREAT SUCCESSES THAT HAVE COME OUT OF A BROADWAY PROPOSAL TO MAKE THE LEAP.

Details of the next edition of the Calella Film Festival, which will take place from 28 October to 4 November, will be announced in September, as always, with a programme that combines screenings, activities related to the audiovisual world, and finally the awards ceremony for the Low Budget – for low-cost productions – and Creative Rosebud – to recognise artistic quality – competitions. 250 entries have been received and are now in the process of being selected.

NOW WE ARE AT THE STAGE OF VISUALISING THE WORKS THAT HAVE BEEN SENT TO US, ABOUT 250 FILMS FROM DIFFERENT PLATFORMS (…) THIS YEAR, A LOT OF CATALAN AND SPANISH CINEMA, SOME INTERNATIONAL, BUT LESS. EVERY EDITION IS DIFFERENT.

If the percentage of Catalan productions has already reached an important level in this 2023 edition, everything points to it going further if the organisation’s agreement with the Catalan Film Academy is confirmed, with whom Calella has been collaborating for years with projects such as the Gaudí Cycle or participating in the Gaudí Awards gala.

WITH THE ACADEMY OF CATALAN CINEMA WE ARE CLOSING AN AGREEMENT BECAUSE THE FILMS THAT ARE PRESENTED AT THE GAUDÍ AWARDS CAN ALSO BE PRESENTED AT THE CFF. THIS IS A GUARANTEE TO PROMOTE THE CATALAN CINEMA AND THE INDUSTRY.

Qazi, the debut film by German director Jakob Gerhmann, and Do it for me, by Álvaro de la Hoz, were the winners of the last edition of the Calella Film Festival, which had a luxury jury, chaired by Juli Fàbregas, with actors, screenwriters, directors, editors and producers such as Ramon Salas, Clàudia Font, Eloi Tomàs, Manuela Velasco and Maria Molins.

Incidentally, the regional vocation of the event has been consolidated as it has incorporated towns such as Mataró and Arenys de Mar as venues for its screenings.
